You May Not Want To Clutter Your Twitter Stream But There Are Better Reason Whys To Have A Great Follow Back Ratio. The Main Reason Is Due To The Power Of Utilizing Social Media Effectively. Another Reason Is Because You Can Still Have A Clean Twitter Stream By Using Great Twitter Tools To Organize Groups Where You Can Focus On The Ones You Want Without Sacrificing Your Following.

My suggestion would be to use TweetDeck when your on a personal computer and an application like Tiny Twitter for your Mobile connection. Both Applications are very good in organizing your points of focus so that way you can still keep track of your main Followers while still keeping tabs of the Twitter world.

TweetDeck is great because you can create a group where you can follow only the Twitter people you want to follow and organization is key which should solve the problem of the Twitter RockStar and Twitter Snob.

Graduation Debt: How to Manage Student Loans and Live Your Life

It's a tough time to be leaving college. Many new graduates don't have a job, find employers aren't particularly eager to see them, and have mounds of debt. Stu- dents who borrow leave school with an average of $20,000 in loans.

There's no getting around the jobs picture. With the economy's downturn, fewer employers are hiring people fresh out of school than they did in 2009, according to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management.

But if you're a new graduate with federal student loans -- called Stafford or Perkins loans -- that part might not be as bad as you think. You have 10 years to pay, and may be able to delay payments if the job market re- mains cruel.

Breathing room. The govern- ment gives people with Stafford or Perkins loans -- which are friendlier than private loans -- six months to get their feet on the ground before starting payments.

Make sure you know what loans you have by using the Na- tional Student Loan Data Sys- tem, at nslds.ed.gov. Meanwhile, pay attention to any private loans, which might need atten- tion immediately. If the six- month grace period passes on federal loans and you are still pressed financially, you will have options only if you respond fast.

Call your lenders, explain the job issues, and ask for temporary payment relief or a payment plan.

Deferment or forbearance. You can get relief for up to three years, but you must show lend- ers proof on such issues as a job loss, active military service, or attending graduate school. If you have a subsidized Stafford loan, the government will pay loan in- terest while you delay payments.

If you have an unsubsidized loan, you can delay payments, but they will add costs to your future. At 6 percent interest, a $40,000 loan after a three-year delay could be more than $47,600, notes the book: Gradua- tion Debt: How to Manage Stu- dent Loans and Live Your Life, by Reyna Gobel.

Income-based repayment plan. If paychecks do not cover living ex- penses and student loans, you can get smaller payments based on income and family size. Good deeds rewarded. If you serve the public -- perhaps through a career in education, health care, libraries, the mili- tary, social work, or police work -- you might be able to use the public-service loan-forgiveness program to have your debt can- celed after 10 years, said Mark Kantrowitz, founder of website FinAid.

10 Rules For Being "Friends Only and Enjoying the Benefits"

Occasionally, you'll meet a girl you have a lot of chemistry with, but for some reason, you don't want to commit to her. So you remain friends with the girl, while still being intimate with each other.
It can become a problem though, if the girl is insistent upon turning it into more than that. She might try to suck you into a relationship. To prevent this, you need to lay some ground rules.

Here are some tips for keeping the "Friends With Benefits" alive and well, for as long as possible.

1. No spending the night.
Letting her spend the night, or spending the night at her place sends the wrong message! It communicates a desire to settle down. If you can, keep the encounters at her place, and then leave. It's much nicer than kicking her out of your place.

2. Keep cuddling to a minimum!
Doing a lot of intimate stuff is going to create an emotional desire for more. Avoid this! You want to keep things physical rather than emotional. Fifteen minutes of cuddling is the max I would recommend. But displays of affection is generally discouraged.

3. Do not enter into a "Friends With Benefits" arrangement while drunk.
There's a difference between a one-night stand and a friend with benefits. But entering either drunk is not wise. God forbid there's a beer-goggles situation. You don't want to go to bed with a supermodel and wake up with a dog, do you? Besides, don't you want to be sober enough to remember all the marvelous fun you had the night before?

4. No leave-behinds!
Do not allow the girl to leave any of her stuff at your place! No toothbrushes, no clothes - nothing! There should be no ties at all. Believe me, women WILL try and do this if they're over enough times, just for "convenience." But it's really a doorway into moving more and more things in, until she's effectively attached herself to you.

5. Don't discuss anything real.
Remember, we're trying to avoid intimacy here, and nothing creates intimacy like talking about important things. No family history, no favorite colors, no goals, no personal triumphs or tragedies. If you want to keep it a friends with benefits situation, you have to stay light: movies, bands, and favorite brands of booze.

6. Pet names aren't allowed.
No sweetie, honey, schmoopie allowed. Once you start with the nick names, a sense of ownership is implied. Don't even call her "babe." Keep it to her name only, because once you start with the terms of endearment, she's going to get the wrong idea.

7. No dinners, no movies, no "quality time" of any sort.
If she insists on going out at all, meet her at a bar for drinks no earlier than ten o'clock at night. The hour between nine and ten is the gray zone between when a real date starts and when it's just a hook-up. Going out late means you don't have to go through the effort of buying her dinner and talking, you just want to get to the good stuff.

8. Hide all evidence of your arrangement.
Throw out all condom wrappers (although you should no matter what), change your sheets, and don't get any hickeys, bruises, bites, or scratches if you expect to date anyone else any time soon.

9. Always play it safe!
One of the sad realities of life is that women will sometimes do dirty things to hook a guy, and one of those things is getting pregnant. So always, always, ALWAYS use condoms and birth control when playing with your friend with benefits!

And more importantly, be sure to properly dispose of the condoms after you're done! Flush 'em down that toilet to make sure there's no possibility of "leakage."

10. Pee with the door closed.
Even if you are using each other for cheap thrills, doesn't mean you should act indecent.
These rules probably sound harsh, but if it's too much, then having a friend with benefits is probably not for you. Many people can get it on and not feel any attachment. Most can't though, and it's a rough game that not everyone can play. Just figure out what you are willing to do and go from there.

"How I Survived Abusive Love"

She truly loved him and thought she could change him. She didn't want to give up on her marriage, until one day, in an instant, she knew she'd never let him hit her again.

"We're not going," my husband said.

During our four years together, he had canceled plans regularly. So I shouldn't have been surprised. But this time, for this special trip, I was.

I met him when I was 22. I had a Harvard diploma, a great job in publishing, my first credit card, endless youthful optimism. Surely I was the best person on earth to help Conor battle the inner demons wrought by an abusive stepfather, a mother on welfare, and hardships that forced him to drop out of school in eighth grade.

He first attacked me five days before we got married. I was so astounded that I wrote it off as prenuptial nerves. The bruises on my throat faded just in time for me to button up my mother's wedding dress.

Next he punched me on our honeymoon. Then Conor pushed me down the stairs, poured coffee grinds over my hair as I dressed for an interview, choked me during arguments. I hid the bruises — and the truth — from everyone. Including myself. It didn't occur to me that I was a battered woman.

He never had to beg me to stay, because I never seriously considered leaving. I loved him. I thought I could change him. He cheered on my dreams: getting an MBA, becoming a mother, laughing more. I couldn't just wake up one morning and give up on us, no matter what he'd done the evening before.

The trip Conor canceled that night was meant to be a celebration of six months of his not hitting me. After I stopped packing our suitcases, I lay on our bed, imagining laughing over café au lait with Conor on a Paris street, riding the Metro with the station colors flying by. The man I imagined in Paris was not the man in the next room. That man was gone, if he'd ever even existed. And I realized I couldn't let myself disappear with him.

"Conor," I whispered when he came to bed. "I've worked too hard. It's all paid for. We won't have a vacation again for a long time. I'd rather go with you, but I'm going anyway."

I suppose it was stupid to stand up to him. But suddenly, in that moment, I had to know what he would do if I put myself first.

"You selfish bitch." His voice shot across the room like a fist, and his body soon followed. "You can't go without me." Much later, when I regained consciousness, my screams echoed in my ears as if some other woman had been screaming her head off in our small bedroom.

For the first time in four years, my love for Conor seemed completely irrelevant.

I did what I had to in order to calm him down.

"I'll call you tomorrow," he whispered as he left, choking back tears.

But instead of waiting for that call, I phoned the police.

That last attack convinced me that the man I loved might kill me one day if I let him. All the hope in the world could not change that. The choice became simple: him or me.

I chose me. And I'm alive today because I did.

The Power to Change: What to Do When Willpower Is Not Enough

In the weeks since making New Years Resolutions, you’ve likely rediscovered something you’ve experienced many times before: how difficult it is to follow through on good intentions.
When it comes to making changes that would improve our health and happiness, we’re of two minds, and I don’t just mean that as a figure of speech.

We are determined to change at times and driven to continue destructive habits at others because the human nervous system has two distinct networks capable of processing information and generating behavior. In other words, not only are we of two minds, it’s almost as though we have two minds.

The mind most familiar to us operates consciously and rationally. It’s sort of like the Windows operating system on your computer. What you see is what you get. And what you see when you think about destructive habits is a desire to change.
However, the conscious mind doesn’t direct our behavior all the time. Under certain conditions, a toggling mechanism in our brains switches control from the rational mind to a more reflexive nervous system network. At such times, it’s as though half our brain is tied behind our backs. We become less capable of thinking clearly and responding sensibly. Instead of choosing how to act, we revert to those behavior patterns that draw the lowest mental voltage: familiar habits.

Trying to restrain ourselves in the heat of such moments is like trying to swim upstream right at the cusp of a waterfall. Unfortunately, that’s the situation most of us keep putting ourselves into by approaching change in the usual way, by relying on willpower. And we keep experiencing the natural result of such an approach: failure.
By the time I work with them, most of my clients have had years of experience with the following pattern: They resolve anew to change, and do all that they can to muster their resolve and determination. They hope and pray that this time, their willpower will be sufficient to bear up under the force of temptation when it hits. Then they proceed through everyday life, more vigilant than usual and more ready to put up a fight.

With a heightened focus and increased exertion, they may find themselves more able than usual to resist the pull of habit. Nonetheless, inevitably, in some weak moment, they find themselves vulnerable again, more easily persuaded by the siren song of habit and less able than usual to marshal their inner resources for the fight. They succumb to temptation. Later, when they’re back in their right mind, they may kick themselves for giving in again. And then they may launch back in to the early stages of this cycle with even more fervor than before.
Over years of working with clients in the caught up in this cycle, I’ve been convinced that we can’t change habits by trying really hard. Fighting and succumbing are both ways of reacting, ruts we fall back into which follow the same pattern each time we repeat them. Did you catch that? Succumbing to urges and fighting them can both become ingrained habits that we repeat automatically, without much variation, without true awareness, and certainly without exercising any creativity. No wonder the roller-coaster of fighting and succumbing can continue in some people’s lives for years without substantial variation.

A change program that works will need to help us alter both our habit of succumbing, and our habit of resisting in the usual way.
Even in the throes of such an automatic, unenlightened cycle, we remain human beings and thus retain our infinite potential. I’m not talking about the capacity to become a world leader or carve an inspiring sculpture. By infinite potential, I’m referring to the fact that our response options at any moment of our lives remain limitless—they can’t be numbered. In theory at least, we can do anything when we’re tempted to succumb to or tempted to fight our urges.

Unfortunately, when we’re most reactive, we’re not in a choosing frame of mind. In fact, we’re not even in a recognizing frame of mind. Therefore, most of the time, we don’t do anything differently even when we could. The inertia of habit is considerable, and our usual patterns tend to continue. Don’t be surprised when change is slow, even after you start working with your habits in new ways.
Fortunately, in everyday life, there are those windows—those zones of freedom—within which we still have the presence of mind to make choices. At least some of the time, we can both recognize that now would be a good time to do things differently and proceed to do so. These are crucial moments, potential turning points, and we can leverage them most powerfully by taking little actions that further expand those windows, those zones of freedom.

Like my kids, who would use the last of their three wishes to wish for even more wishes, we can turn these key moments of freedom when we feel like being reactive into even more freedom by doing things that help us ease away from the fringe of the reactive state of mind.
Breathing and noticing are two simple but surprisingly effective tools we can use to buy ourselves even more freedom at those crucial potential turning points. Let’s briefly explore each one.
Breathing is one of the few automatic nervous system functions that we can take over and direct for ourselves. We can’t make a point of slowing our heart rate or stop sweating because we want to stay calm. We can, however, take a few slow, deep breaths when we realize that bodily tension is building. This enables our body to stay more relaxed when we were starting to get keyed-up. Interestingly enough, this has a profound effect on the mind, because the mind takes its lead from the body.

When the body’s tense, the mind tends to fixate. It narrows attention down and can only choose between a restricted set of reactions. Old familiar habits like succumbing and fighting are usually top on the list. When the body is relaxed, on the other hand, the mind gets the message to broaden our awareness. In this open frame of mind we can observe things we’d otherwise miss and consider a multitude of possible options. We remain free to repeat a destructive habit, practice an adaptive habit, do something we’ve never done before, or even to forbear taking action altogether.
In addition to taking a few slow, deep breaths, we can also notice some of the input that flows into our senses at any given moment. For instance, we can look at one thing in our environment, one visual point, as we take a deep breath. As we focus fully on that one thing and the way it looks at this very moment, something interesting happens in our brains. They have a limited capacity for processing information, and “what’s real now” gets priority over plans, memories, abstract thoughts, fears, and fantasies. Because our nervous systems operate according to this Reality First principle, we can interrupt reactive mental habits by tuning in to and becoming mindful of current sensory input.
Personally, when I practice noticing, I usually go back and forth between three senses. I find and fixate on a particular sight during one inhale, then as I exhale I direct my attention from what I was looking at and tune into what I can hear. After I single out a particular background noise, I focus on it during my next inhale. Then I rub my hand against a nearby object like the dashboard of my car and attend closely to its peculiar texture as I slowly inhale again.

If I go through these three senses a couple times each, I find that by the time I’m done breathing & noticing my mind has usually freed itself up from where it was lodged. I can then decide what I want to think about and consider some response options that are more sensible than the reactive habits that felt so compelling a few moments ago.
During the first month I worked with him, I encouraged Steve to practice two exercises between our weekly meetings. The first was to keep a record of those times when he found himself caught up in a reactive state of mind. He did this by recording in a little notebook his “spots & thoughts.” At least two or three times a week, usually once he was back in his right mind again, he wrote down something about the situation or time of day (the spot) and something about what was going through his mind (the thought) when he felt more emotionally reactive than usual.

This exercise helped him become more aware of both how frequently he shifted into an emotionally reactive mode and the events and situations in his life that tended to trigger it. After his first week of tracking spots and thoughts, I encouraged him to practice the breathing and noticing sequence in a few of the moments when he caught himself starting to feel reactive.
At first, Steve used the breathing and noticing when he felt the pull of pornography, the habit that he had hired me to help him overcome. He said at the beginning of our third session, “I was surprised how much that breathing and looking and listening thing helped. It seems to dissipate and defuse temptation a bit. A couple of times it went away and was gone for good. Then on Thursday it kept pounding away at me, and eventually I slipped up.

But it seems like a promising tool that I can put to use in the future. In fact, it helped me keep my cool when I was upset at my fifteen-year-old. He violated his curfew on Friday night and I did it as I was sat there in the living room waiting for him to get home.” Steve clenched his jaw and let out a sigh: “There’s the neighbor’s mailbox… (another sigh) There’s the feeling of the carpet against my toes…”
I was glad that Steve had something new he could do, something he could use that would sometimes break the spell of obsession in the heat of the moment. However, I knew that if he just kept trying to catch his destructive urges and turn things around once he felt a strong pull, he’d continue to fight a losing battle. I knew that he would be more likely to succeed in the long run if he started to pay attention to the landscape upstream from the waterfall. Then, he could get better at turning around before the current got so stiff. Instead of focusing solely on avoiding the destructive habit itself, I encouraged him to focus on identifying and managing the factors that switch on his reflexive mind and disengage his capacity to decide how he’s going to act.
As he began to track the “spots & thoughts” associated with his other, less disturbing emotional reactions, he discovered what most of my clients do: that he didn’t get to the point where he felt a strong urge for pornography all at once. Instead, he discovered that he had been unknowingly spending large chunks of time during the week working himself up into a state of vulnerability. He did this the way we all do: by becoming reactive in other ways that are less troubling and thus less noticeable.
For instance, Steve started to notice that he was more prone to experience sexual temptation after a stressful week at work. “Then I feel too wound up to sleep, so I stay up and channel surf. I find myself lingering on those titillating dating shows or those infomercials for sex-related 900 numbers. It only takes a bit of that before I’m fully into it and I’ve lost my resolve to abstain. Next thing I know I’m spending money we don’t have on that garbage with no regard for how I’ll feel later or how my wife is going to react when finds out I’ve relapsed again.”
With coaching, Steve started to identify the earliest stages of the pattern that eventually culminated in those relapses. He kept a lookout for those times when he started to work himself up at the office or at home. Using his spots & thoughts notebook, he discovered, for instance, that his mind and body got particularly keyed-up when his inbox got too full or he started to get phone calls from employees in other departments of the company who were waiting on one of the databases he was programming. He’d start going full bore, which had obvious advantages. He’d usually get more done more quickly. However, in that super-focused state of mind, he was also less likely to notice that he needed to take a break, grab something to eat. He was unresponsive to subtle urges to stretch, stand up, or take a little walk.

As he paid more attention to these stressful periods, he realized that he even avoided taking bathroom breaks, at times until he was in pain from a full bladder! He observed that eventually, his gung-ho mentality reached the point of diminishing returns even in terms of productivity. His concentration would fade, he’d make more computer programming mistakes. He also noticed a moderate but distinct lagging of his morale during intense times.
After identifying this earlier part of his pattern, Steve started to use breathing and noticing to interrupt what he called his productivity compulsion. It surprised him to be working on this, because just weeks earlier he hadn’t even entertained the possibility that his drive to deliver a good product at work might play a role in his destructive habit. Now Steve relied on breathing & noticing, the same skills he’d been using to interrupt sexual impulses, to break the spell of the reactive frame of mind that kicked in at work.

He still worked hard when demands were intense, but a few times a day he’d push himself back from his desk, take a few slow, deep breaths, and notice the sound of air rushing through the heating duct, a branch on a tree in the courtyard of his office complex, or the texture of his corduroy pant leg as he rubbed it between his finger and thumb.
This helped him reestablish a calm state of mind. Sometimes he could see that he was fixating too much on one topic and was at risk of missing the forest for the trees. A few times he returned phone calls that he might have otherwise forgotten about. Usually, he continued the work he’d been doing, but sometimes the task now had a noticeably lighter feel to it.
Over a period of weeks, the sexual urges that had haunted him for seventeen years diminished and became less pesky. Steve concluded that by changing the way he responded at work and at home, he was preventing the buildup that used to eventually cry out for sexual release. Steve slipped in his progress several more times during the time I worked with him. However, after the fact, rather than kicking himself and assuming that he was “back at square one,” he looked at each lapse in an effort to determine what factors had increased his vulnerability.

Each time, he learned something new that he could apply in his ongoing efforts. As he did this, I could tell that Steve was responding as a human being, exercising his infinite potential. He was being thoughtful and deliberative, rather than lapsing back into a familiar sequence like “berating myself for messing up” or “trying harder this time.”
Of course, the portrayal I’ve given of Steve’s progress is oversimplified. After all, I met with him eleven times over a period of just less than a year. However, what you’ve read is the essence of what helped him and dozens of other clients struggling like him to change their habits. Try out these principles and practices for yourself. Lost your mojo? How to get it back

Sports fans might connect mojo to momentum in a game, and Mr. Goldsmith does offer the example of a basketball team, seemingly defeated at half time, coming back to later win.

But he stresses the transformation in poise, confidence and bearing for both teams that accompanies that flip in momentum.

He says mojo is the moment when we do something that's purposeful, powerful, and positive - and the rest of the world recognizes it. It's about happiness and meaning in life.

"Mojo is the positive spirit toward what we are doing now that starts from the inside and radiates to the outside," he notes in the book written with agent Mark Reiter.

Our mojo is apparent when the positive feelings toward what we are doing come from within and are evident for others to see, so there is no gap between the positive way we perceive ourselves and how we are perceived by others.

To help understand mojo, contemplate the opposite: "nojo."

You have seen it in people who have a negative attitude toward what they are doing that starts from the inside and radiates to everyone around them.

They play the victim instead of taking responsibility, stay in place rather than marching forward, try to do only the minimum, rather than run the extra mile, are uninterested, rather than curious, and indifferent, rather than caring.

Mr. Goldsmith works with top executives to change such behaviour.

With that in mind, he identifies four vital ingredients that need to be combined in order for you to have - and benefit from - mojo:

Identity

Who do you think you are? You need a firm handle on your identity to understand why you gain - or lose - mojo. The issue is not how others perceive you, but how you perceive yourself, he stresses.

To alter behaviour, we often need to change our identity - our self-perception, he advises.

Chatting with Bono of the Irish band U2, he picked up on the following identities as the singer described his life: Regular guy, a bloke from Dublin who liked to hang out with his mates; musician; rock star; and latest, humanitarian.

"He did not let his definition of who he was - attractive as the identity of a rock star may be - limit his potential of what else he could become," Mr. Goldsmith notes.

Achievement

What have you done lately? What accomplishments have meaning for you and an effect on others? In studying achievements, focus on what you bring to the task and what the task gives you, he advises. Be sure not to overestimate - or underestimate - your achievement. And consider whether you are succeeding in areas that are important to you while letting go of achievement that doesn't bring happiness and meaning to your life.

Reputation

Who do people think you are? How do people respond to the identity you have carved out for yourself and your achievements? You may not agree with others' assessments, but you need to be aware of them -and how you are going to change your reputation.

Acceptance

What can you change about the people and events around you, and what is beyond your control? We often need to accept things that we may dislike, to find the positive spirit in our lives and positive actions that Mr. Goldsmith is talking about. Instead of whining about being passed over for a promotion or some other business setback, take it in stride, and move on.

Mr. Goldsmith highlights a mojo paradox: While we may want it, the reality is that our default response is not to experience happiness or meaning, and to accept inertia. He asks you to evaluate your activities over a day on a 1 to 10 scale (with 10 being the highest), asking two simple questions: How much long-term benefit or meaning did I experience from this activity, and how much long-term satisfaction or happiness did I experience in it? Then try to change your life so there are fewer low-score activities.

He also offers a 14-tool kit to help you gain more mojo. They include:

Establish criteria that matter to you

When people lose mojo, it's often because they are rootless, without clear goals. Many people who work for others forget that they can set their own goals, rather than relying totally on the criteria of others.

Rebuild one brick at a time

When we lose our mojo, the thought of restoring it can seem overwhelming. Don't try to do everything at once. Apply yourself to serial achievements, rebuilding one brick at a time. That also gives your colleagues time to adjust to your new self.

Know when to stay and when to go

If you're not in the right job, you have to be honest with yourself and face the critical decision of whether to leave for somewhere else, where your mojo can be more pronounced, or whether you can change things where you are.

Give your friends
a lifetime pass

If you have a friend or colleague who has helped you in significant ways but has a flaw that drives you nuts - for example, always being late for your lunches together - accept it. Think of all the good things he or she has done for you, and let go of the less significant irritants.

Mr. Goldsmith's book is well-organized and practical, with lots of tools that can help you be more successful and happier in life.

In Addition: Consultant Seth Godin's books are usually a joy to read but his latest, Linchpin (Portfolio, 244 pages, $32.50), is, unfortunately, a disappointment.

His premise is fine: We have moved into an economy where more and more of us are dispensable to the large firms we work for, which can replace us with machines or offshore workers.

To compensate, we must become indispensable, finding ways that companies will prize our efforts. Similarly, our companies must become indispensable.

The solution is to become like artists, creative and inspired, willing to give of ourselves freely, without concern about what will come back to us. In time, we will be rewarded for that freely given activity.

An artist must paint or draw something because of what's inside himself. Similarly, you must find a similar zest and creativity to go beyond expectations and find ways to help your customers, for which you will be rewarded. Think of the waiter who loves his or her job and takes care of customers flawlessly because he or she is intent on giving them an enjoyable time they will long remember. In return, the tips will flow to thank the server for his or her artistry.

The book is written in a series of short bursts, like Mr. Godin's popular blog postings, which are sometimes more evocative than clear, and they explore the notion of being a linchpin in a rather circuitous way.

It's all quite hazy. There are no tools, but many clever insights and a lot of inspirational writing, urging you to become a linchpin.

The Steps to an Effective Job Search

Don't Get Discouraged

First, you must realize that it takes an average 4-6 months to find employment. If you are a recent grad, expect six months, likewise, if you are changing careers. Make a list of resources available to you in your job search: job search websites, like careerbuilder.com, community organizations, local employment agencies, the chamber of commerce, people you know, newspapers, etc. You are going to apply for a lot of jobs and never hear anything from many of them again. Don't let this discourage you. Keep in mind - you know what your qualifications are, and if a company is not interested in meeting with you to learn more about them, it's their loss. There are lots of jobs out there, you will eventually find one that suits your needs and interests - they may have hired someone they thought was highly qualified who ends up leaving in a month because it wasn't right for them. By this time, you will have found the perfect job for you and if they call you back now asking for an interview, you get the pleasure of telling them that you're sorry, but they missed the opportunity to snatch you up - some other company already recognized your value! (Believe me, this has happened to me and the pleasure is great!)

Post Your Resume

Contact any acquaintances you have and let them know that you are seeking employment. Ask them to let you know of any openings that they become aware of that you might be interested in. Create a killer resume and post it on the major job search engines. Software is available that you can purchase that will submit your resume to many of these sites. If you wish to utilize such a program, you may, but I have never done this simply because there are not a ton of websites that post jobs in my area, and since I'm not interested in relocating, I find it a waste to spend money submitting my resume to a bunch of sites that will never have jobs for me. If you live in a large metropolitan area, it may behoove you to do this. Use your best judgment.

Newspapers

Typically newspapers have a lot of jobs in their classified section on Wednesdays and Sundays. I recommend subscribing to the Sunday edition of any newspapers in your area. Most newspapers now also have websites which include a classified section that you can check each day. Set a specific time, preferably sometime in the morning, to check out these sites each day. Take the time to mail an application to every ad that interests you. Often, employers will post a deadline for applying. If that deadline is already near, go ahead and apply. If the deadline is a month away, APPLY NOW ANYWAY. Employers will take note of what resumes they receive almost right away, therefore you have just labeled yourself as someone who takes initiative and is on top of things!

Tracking

I also recommend keeping a record of the jobs to which you have applied and when, as well as the contact information. This will allow you to keep track of how many resumes you have sent and who you hear back from. This can be done using an Excel spreadsheet, and is fairly easy to do. Simply create columns for name of company, position, address, phone, contact name, date applied, response, interview, follow up, etc. Then fill in the information that you have and add to it as you collect more. I also like to print a copy of the job description or advertisement, so that if you are contacted by the employer for an interview you will have an opportunity to review that and target what skills you highlight in your interview to what is most appropriate for the job.

Job Boards

We already discussed posting your resume to the major job boards and any specialized boards in the industry you want to work in. This may result in employers and/or recruiters contacting you first, which is great. If not, don't worry. Some employers simply post jobs to these sites without searching for resumes. They may prefer to let candidates make the initial contact. Having your resume already posted makes your job a little easier, because you can often use your posted resume to apply to a job rather than resubmitting it to each job. Keep in mind, however, that some employers post jobs with instructions on how to apply - always follow these instructions even if it means you have to go to their corporate website, create a profile, input a bunch of information and submit your resume via their site. If you don't follow this, your resume will more than likely be discarded, if the employer ever sees it at all.

I've found that job boards are a great tool in searching for the perfect opportunity. They're easy to use for both the employer and the candidate, they're cost-effective and they tend to reach a larger audience. Many employers have now begun to utilize job boards online over newspapers. Newspapers are not able to offer the almost immediate connection that internet job boards have, and they do not allow the employer to search through resumes without actually advertising a job. Therefore, you may find jobs posted on job boards that do not appear in your local newspaper. However, don't discount the newspaper - some employers still utilize newspapers as their only recruitment method so you don't want to miss out on those opportunities. You will find that not all job boards have jobs posted that are in your community. Identify those that do, bookmark them, and visit them daily. Most of these boards have new jobs each day, and you want to be the first to see them and have the opportunity to reply to them. Apply to any jobs relevant to you immediately and don't forget to keep a record of the information and print out a copy of the advertisement.

Temp Agencies

Contact any local temp agencies in your area. You can find these by looking in the employment section of the yellow pages, and many run continuous ads in the newspaper classifieds section. If you are currently out of work and are in need of a way to earn some money while you continue looking for a job, you may want to consider temporary placements. If you are currently employed and just looking for a change of jobs, temp agencies sometimes offer career placement positions. Be upfront with them when you contact them about what type of work you are looking for. If they offer services that fit your needs, sign up with them.

Chamber of Commerce

Okay, it's time for me to mention the dreaded word...networking. It's really not as bad as it may seem. The easiest and most painless way to do this is to join your local chamber of commerce as an individual. Sign up to be on a couple of committees, meet some new prominent businesspeople and attend some chamber events. Typically they will hold periodic evening events called "time-outs" or "pm exchanges". These are great places to get introduced to a lot of people in the community. Mention to them that you are looking for a new job and you just might find an inside track to a job you would have never otherwise known existed.

How To Build The Ultimate Job Finding Dashboard with iGoogle

Picture this: You wake up in the morning, grab your cup of coffee, and meander over to your computer. After checking your morning email and twitter accounts, you get started looking for some new work. You check a number of different job boards, look for keywords on a bunch of job-finding sites, and complete several twitter searches. After about hour or so of looking, you’ve got 5 or so potential leads. Not a bad start!

While 5 leads is pretty decent for an hour of searching — what if you could accomplish the same thing in 15 minutes? What about 5 minutes?

In this article we’re going to show you how to take that entire job search process and replace it with a single customized job finding page on iGoogle. We’ll aggregate all of the various job boards, grab feeds for different twitter searches, and create a single dashboard where you can look for jobs at a glance.

Step 1: Create a Google Account

If you already have a Google account, or know how to use iGoogle, skip this step. If you don’t have a Google account, now’s the time to create one. We’re going to spend a lot of time customizing an iGoogle dashboard, so you want to make sure it is saved securely in your account.

To create an account, just jump over to Google and click ‘Sign in’ at the top right. On the next page click ‘Create an account now’ and follow the instructions.

Step 2: Clean Things Up With a New Tab

iGoogle starts you off with a rather packed and busy page, which isn’t going to be helpful in the search for new projects.

Instead of deleting everything, the easiest way to create your new job finding page is to add a new tab — and this works for those of you who already have customized iGoogle pages too.

You’ll also want to uncheck the “I’m feeling lucky” box too, as that would just fill up your new tab with stuff again, which is what we’re trying to avoid.

Step 3: Add Your Favorite Job Boards to iGoogle

Now we’re ready to start getting into the fun stuff — adding job boards to your page. Since this is a Textbook site we’ll be using a ColemanBook.com distributors as our example, but you can follow along with any industry, topic, or job type that you want.

So, create a list of the job boards that you frequent regularly and would like to include in your personalized dashboard. We’re going to use these job boards for our example:

ColemanBook Job Board
Authentic Jobs
Krop Creative & Tech Jobs

Once you have your list of job boards, open them all up in your browser, along with your iGoogle page.

Look for links to RSS feeds. Go to one of your chosen job boards, we’ll start with ColemanBook, and look for small links to rss feeds. They’ll look something like you see on the right.

Find the RSS feed that is most relevant to you.With a little digging you can usually come up with a selection of multiple different job feeds for each major job board.

For example, ColemanBook has feeds for each of their different categories — but since we’re building a page for the freelance web designer, we only want the feed with design jobs.

Right click and copy the RSS feed.
You’ll need the RSS feed to add this job board to your iGoogle dashboard, so right click on the best link and click “Copy link location”. That RSS link is now on your computer’s clipboard.

Open iGoogle and Add the RSS feed. Go to your iGoogle dashboard, and in the upper right hand side click on the “Add Stuff” link. This will bring you to a page where you can add a lot of gadgets.

Once the page loads, click on “Add feed or gadget” in the lower part of the left column. That will open a box where you can paste in the RSS url that you just found in the previous step.

Repeat for each of job board. Open each job board and look for the most specific RSS feed you can find, and then copy/paste it somewhere you can refer to it later. Once you have the link for all of your job boards, it’s time to add them to iGoogle.

Here’s what it looks like so far:

Step 4: Add Custom Twitter Searches

As we’ve mentioned a number of times on ColemanBook, twitter can be a great place to find new jobs of all different types and industries. We don’t want to overlook this potentially valuable resource when creating your job-finding dashboard, so in this section we’ll show you how to include twitter searches in your page.

The first step is to go to search.twitter.com and test a few search phrases to see which results work well. For our example we’re going to use these search terms:

Hire Web Designer
Know Web Designer

There are an infinite number of combinations to try, so test until you find something you like. Once you have a few search phrases that work well, move on to the next step.

Copy the RSS link for your search. In the upper right corner of twitter search results page you’ll see a link that says “Feed for this query.”

Right click on that link and copy it to your clipboard, like we did with each of the job boards.

Add the twitter feeds to iGoogle.
Go to your iGoogle dashboard, like we did for the job boards, and add a new RSS feed for each of the twitter searches you want.

Tada! Now you’ve got both customized job board feeds and specific twitter search results showing in one place.

Step 5: Add More and Customize

The final step in creating the ultimate job finding dashboard is to customize it even further to really make it your own. You can do that in several ways, but here are a few ideas:

Add a gadget or two. There are a lot of other gadgets out there made specifically for iGoogle, and you can find all of them with the “Add Stuff” link. Some of them can help with your job search, like the indeed.com job search gadget, and others are just fun to have. I personally added the ColemanBook feed to my iGoogle page :-)

Customize the look. The other way you can customize your job dashboard is by changing the theme. You’ll notice in my finished product that I’ve changed it to a darker theme than the usual. The other way that I’ve customized it is to make each feed display 5 items instead of the default 3, as I think this adds to the utility of the page.

Heard of a little thing called Twitter? I hope so! Not a day goes past where we don't read some kind of article on it. They're not always positive articles - like most success stories, there are people who love it, and people who loathe it. But at the end of the day you can no longer ignore it. Twitter is here to stay, and it can help your small business.

How? Well, many of the articles I read surround success stories of Twitter - how it has directly helped businesses gain more customers. And you know what? They're always small businesses - these are the people who are using Twitter to maximize their product/brand awareness and as a result are generating new businesses and boosting the spend of existing customers.

Here's a couple of Twitter success stories:

Hubspot, a fantastic source for online marketing, recently wrote about the Kogi Korean BBQ taco truck in LA. They've been using social media, and in particular Twitter, with astonishing affect. They identified that their young, techno-savvy customers were using Twitter, so they got involved too. They now have a community of over 14,000 people. They used Twitter to broadcast the locations of their trucks, solicited new names for their trucks and are also designing new company t-shirts via their blog and Twitter. As a result, they now have constant queues of people, lining up to get their hands on one of their tacos. Considering the current state of the economy, that's a pretty nice position to be in!

Another, well documented Twitter success story is that of CoffeeGroundz, a coffee shop that has credited Twitter with almost doubling their clientele! CoffeeGroundz owner, J.R.Cohen registered with Twitter and started following members of his local Twitterati (definition: the tweet elite, whose feeds attract thousands of followers and whose 140-character spews capture the attention of the rapt who doggedly monitor them) - he soon build up over 1000 followers. One day one of his followers called Sean, sent a direct tweet to Cohen, saying that "I want to pre order a bkfast wrap so I can zip thru drive thru to get back for gas man. C' est possible?". Cohen replied straight away saying okay. What do you want on it?". Ten minutes later Sean had been through the drive-thru and had picked up his breakfast wrap. This simple exchange generated a lot of buzz on Twitter, and was hailed as the first time a to-go order had ever been placed via the medium. Grasping the opportunity with both hands Cohen started taking to-go orders via direct messages from any of his Twitter followers.

CoffeeGroundz has also expanded on their Twitter success by hosting a Tweet-Up - an event where local Twitterers meet up to chat, network and generally get to know people better. Not only did this generate great PR for CoffeeGroundz, but they also kept the 100+ Twitterers well fed and watered - lining their pockets even further!

There are many examples of how small businesses are using Twitter for their advantage. It can be as simple as confirming an appointment, offering some advice, or just commenting on other people's conversations. The point is that you can't gain from the benefits if you're not there. Twitter is perfect for small businesses - it doesn't cost a penny, and it allows you to reinforce one of your key USPs - your individual character and personal touch to business.

What else can you use Twitter for?

Understand your customers - by using Twitter polls, you can gain insight on your followers that can be fed back into your business.

Form valuable business relationships - it's not just your customers who are using Twitter. It's likely that journalists and body representatives are using it too, so use if to build relationships with these key people.

Events and reporting - if you are hosting an event, create buzz about it by broadcasting details via Twitter.

Offer exclusive offers and promotions - offer discounts to Twitterers only.

Reputation management - use Twitter to make followers aware of your service levels, answer customer questions and engage in conversations about your offerings.

Research reveals that entrepreneurs manage, organize, and take on the risks of a particular enterprise or business. They are also innovative, creative people who thrive on change and have an eye on the future.

Common characteristics

There are also some other general traits that people who fall into this intriguing category seem to share:

- Intelligent awareness-They can analyze complicated situations, tend to take an overall view of a situation, and move smoothly from planning to making important decisions to working on several projects simultaneously. They are always aware of essentials and weigh various alternatives to reach their objectives.

- Facing reality-They will consider new possibilities if they are convinced that such an adjustment will help them to reach their goals, constantly monitor the status of their various projects and programs, and verify the information they receive before taking any decisive action.

- Leadership-This ability is usually obvious to others because they identify problems more quickly than anyone else, are open to suggestions, and deal comfortably with the knowledge that more than one solution may be acceptable.

- Lack of arrogance-While they are content when people praise what they have accomplished, they are far from being egotistical. They know their limitations and they do not hesitate to seek information and guidance, especially when a business issue is outside of their area of expertise. To them, the true barometer of their success is the quality of their business.

Along with this, entrepreneurs are comfortable in a stressful situation and regard a failure or setback as a challenge and a learning experience, rather than some kind of threat. They feel somewhat uneasy when things are going too smoothly and often channel their pent-up energy by becoming involved in a new project.

This is one of my favorite frequently asked questions. Something that you need to know when it comes to making money online is that you must have determination. Forget about everything else, once you have determination you will earn money online.

I can't count how many times I see people try to earn income online and end up failing. The number one reason people fail to earn income is determination. You can not expect to make money in 1 day. This is the problem with most people who try to earn income online.

Probably no families in the world ever have been as self-reliant as the Americans who wielded their muskets in the Colonies and on the frontier. They literally made their own living, for a family had little or nothing except what their members could do and make. A large family was an advantage, since then there were many hands to plant and weed and harvest, to chop wood, to carpenter, to spin and dye and weave, cook and sew. A widow with children was a matrimonial prize.

Our Thanksgiving celebrates the security of the colonists. Our turkeys are the descendants of the wild turkeys their muskets brought down; our cranberries, of the cranberries they found in the bogs. Our pumpkins, potatoes, and onions still commemorate the good harvest the Pilgrims gathered in 1623.

For 250 years and more many American families, like the first colonists, measured their security in terms of the things they could make and do for themselves. As the frontier stretched westward, covered wagons carried with them the habits and ideals that had conquered the wilderness at Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay.
Now automobiles plunge in days over the trails that a scout on horseback or a wagon could travel only in months, and airplanes cross the continent in a single hop. The ways in which American families live have changed as swiftly as the ways in which they travel.

Within the lifetime of people still living, the frontier has all but vanished. Change is so obvious that we are likely to take it for granted. It has come so quickly that it is hard to realize what it means to us who live today.

In the following pages, print and pictures outline some of the changes that have brought us to days when we reach for a pay envelope, not a musket, to get our food and protect our homes.

WORK MOVES TO THE CITY

As late as 1890 more than a third of the Nation's homes were on farms. Country families are bigger than city families. Hence it was not until 1920 that the census found a greater number of people in the towns and cities than on farms and in villages. Today the farms have only about a fifth of the homes and less than a quarter of the population. In hardly more than a generation we have ceased to be predominantly a nation of country people.

Boys and girls left the farms because the road of opportunity led to the city. Not so many hands were needed on the farms. Machines were taking over work that muscles once had done. Science taught more efficient ways to use the land. Up to 1870 the farms had more than half the Nation's workers, not counting children. By 1930 they had only one in five.

Farm efficiency has grown especially rapidly in recent years. Production per acre increased nearly 20 percent between 1910 and 1930. Production per worker increased 40 percent.

Young people from the farms went into the factories and mines. They helped build the railroads and the cities. There seemed no end to new jobs in the rapidly developing Nation. From 1870 up to 1910 each census found a larger percentage of the population "gainfully occupied."
As factories turned out more goods, more people were needed to sell them and to finance the making and selling. Since 1900 literally millions of men and women have found jobs in these fields--as salespeople, stenographers, and clerks, telephone and telegraph operators, wholesale and retail dealers, bookkeepers, cashiers and accountants, insurance agents, commercial travelers, stockbrokers, and bankers.

And as invention and science multiplied the output of one field after another, more of our energy could be turned into jobs which have to do with services, rather than things. There has been a growing number of restaurant and lunchroom keepers, janitors and elevator operators, barbers and manicurists, doctors, dentists, and trained nurses; of librarians, teachers, and other public servants; actors, authors, and artists; lawyers, chemists, and technical engineers.

Some of these added jobs represent services which families formerly had done for themselves at home. Others reflect our rising standards of living--more and better education, better health, more leisure, greater comfort and convenience in daily living.

MAKING A LIVING AND MAKING MONEY

The life in all these many occupations differs in one way from that of the farms where once most Americans made their living.

Today we do not make a living. We buy it. We make money, and that money mostly determines the kinds of houses we live in, the food we eat and the clothes we wear, the security and independence we look to in hard times, sickness, and old age.

Even in the Colonies, of course, some things were bought and sold. Paul Revere was a silversmith as well as a soldier. But the colonists used money chiefly to buy the luxuries of those days, such as Paul Revere's porringers, or fine furniture, or tea, coffee, and spices.

Many Americans lived as did a New England farmer who wrote in his diary:

"My farm gave me and my whole family a good living on the produce of it and left me, one year and another, one hundred and fifty dollars, for I never spent more than ten dollars a year, which was for salt, nails, and the like. Nothing to eat, drink, or wear was bought, as my farm produced it all."

On the farms of our grandparents where soap and candles were made and hogs butchered for the smokehouse, a family still made a considerable part of their living without using money. Even today, an important part of the "income" of farm families comes in the things they raise and make for themselves.
But farmers, too, now must have money. They need it for the kinds of things we no longer make at home and also for the modern tools of their trade--for machines and gas and oil to run them with, for commercial fertilizers, for radios to follow weather and market reports.

In the towns and cities, money is the means of existence from day to day.

The home of a pioneer family was a little world in itself. Members of the family were their own farm and factory workers, butchers, bakers, and barbers; policemen and firemen; often their own doctors and nurses, and sometimes their own teachers as well.

As one of these occupations after another has gone out from under a family's roof, it has become possible for us to have more goods and services than a family can produce for themselves. But most of a family's chance to have them depends on their ability to buy a living.

A FAMILY NO LONGER IS A FIRM

It is common to hear young people discussing when they can afford to marry and have children. That question would have astonished young people on the frontier.

A young man then could hardly afford not to marry. He needed a wife as a business partner, children as helpers. In early New England not only spinsters but bachelors were under a cloud. Bachelors, in fact, were regarded with suspicion. Usually they had to live where the court told them to. Single people had to attach themselves to a family to get a chance to work for their living.

Both the children and the old people earned their place at the family table.

As we have shifted from a land economy to a money economy, the work of the young and the old no longer has the same value in helping a family to make their living.

Children need more schooling. Once they learned from their chores, while doing the family's business, many of the things they needed to know as adults. Now work at home fails to give them the background they need for jobs in business, trades, and professions. State by State, we agreed that children must go to school.

Change in the work done at home and in our knowledge and standards of child care made children almost a luxury to a family, instead of an economic asset. Families are smaller, especially in the cities. There are fewer sons and daughters to care for the old people of future years.

Old people, like children, have lost much of their economic value to a household. Most American families no longer live in houses where one can build on a room or a wing to shelter aging parents and aunts and uncles and cousins. They no longer have gardens, sewing rooms, and big kitchens where old people can help make the family's living.

Old people were not "dependent" upon their relatives when there was need in a household for work they could do. They have become dependent since their room and their board cost money, while they have little to give in return. Now they need money of their own to keep the dignity and independence they had when their share in work was the equivalent in money.

The shift of work away from homes also explains the work of girls and women today. Women have always worked for their living. When work left the home, they followed it into factories and offices. By 1930 the census found a quarter of all the girls and women "gainfully occupied", not including housewives working without pay for their families.

Studies of employed women have shown again and again that they, like men, get jobs in order to support themselves and their families. In other words, they, too, have shifted from making a living to making money. It is among native-born white American women that the habit of wage work has grown up so rapidly.

Married women, like single women, find it necessary to work for wages. Between 1900 and 1930 the percentage of married women at gainful work increased six times as rapidly as that of single women of the same ages. Many married women carry the double job of housewife and wage earner. Here again, studies show that they do it because their families need their money.

Most of the work of wage-earning women represents not women's rights but women's duties.

During our lifetime it has become increasingly difficult for a family to pull together and go into business for themselves in one way or another.

For years there was good land to the westward to be had for the taking. Homesteading was an outlet for the sturdy and ambitious. In the towns, family shops and businesses were carried on with relatively small amounts of capital.

There is no more free land on which a living can be made. A farmer needs machines as well as skill and grit if he is to compete in the market. In the towns and cities, modern methods of production and merchandising have greatly increased the experience and capital needed to go into business and stay in business.

Individual enterprise, which so often meant family enterprise, now plays a minor part in earning our national income. Including the farmers, only about one in five of the gainfully occupied works for himself. As a nation, we no longer work as individuals or families, but as employees.

LIFE IS SAFER, BUT LIVING LESS SECURE

The safety of life has never increased as rapidly at any time on record as in the past 40 years.

Take Massachusetts, for example, where there are records over a long period. A baby born in Massachusetts in 1789 had, on the average, an expectation of a life of about 35 years. In the next century the expectation of life at birth increased about 8 years; babies born in Massachusetts in 1890 had before them a life expectation of 42.5 years for men and 44.4 years for women. But between 1890 and 1930 those averages grew to more than 59 years for men and more than 62.5 for women.

The gain in the 40 years following 1890 was twice as great as that of the whole century preceding.
This gain in average length of life has come almost wholly from success in saving the lives of babies, children, and young people. More of us live to reach middle age and old age. At the same time the birth rate has been declining. The result of these changes is that old people form an increasing percentage of the population.

While life became safer, the chance to earn a living became less secure. The growth of employment in basic industries began to slow up. Machines and improved methods made it possible to increase output without increasing the number of workers needed to produce it. Then, for the first time, one important field of work after another reached its peak in employment and began to decline--began to use a smaller number of workers.

Agriculture's share in the total employment of the Nation had been going down since 1870 but each census up through 1910 counted a larger number of agricultural workers. In the census of 1920 and the census of 1930 the number of workers was smaller. In 1930 there were 600,000 fewer farmers and farm workers than there had been 20 years before.

A similar change came in mining. Efficiency was growing. In 1930 two soft-coal miners could turn out as much as three had done in 1900. The peak in the census record of mine workers came in 1920. In the 10 years that followed, industrial activity was expanding, and new mine workers were needed for the gas wells and oil wells. But by 1930 the total number of miners had dropped by 100,000.

All through the prosperous years of the 1920's there were fewer workers on the pay rolls of factories and steam railroads than there had been at the start of the decade. In 1930 the average number of factory workers was 1,500,000 less than that of 1920. The average number of employees of steam railroads had dropped by 500,000.

A man no longer had the same chance to continue through his working years in the occupation he had learned as a boy. The new openings in trade and the service occupations and professions often made specialized demands which workers from the older industries found it hard to meet. It was not likely to help a jobless miner, for example, to learn that more barbers were being employed.

This shift in occupations was particularly difficult for older men. From 1890 on, an increasing percentage of the men of 65 and over has been reported as unoccupied.

With the census of 1920 a more general change appeared. In that year and in 1930 the reports showed a drop in the percentage of all men and boys of 16 and over in gainful occupations. In spite of the increasing employment of girls and women, these reports found a decline in the proportion of all Americans of 16 and over in gainful occupations.

Work has been shifting from place to place as well as from occupation to occupation. Manufacturing was declining in New England, for example, at the time when the growing automobile industry pushed it upward in the Central States. Often families must move to follow jobs or find them.
Americans always have moved in search of a living. The older migrations, however, were likely to be those of people who expected to found a new home, settle down, and grow up with the town. The quick shifts of recent years have split up families. They have weakened the old ties of kinship and neighborliness on which a family used to rely. The loss of neighborliness and the increasing size of stores and factories have weakened the personal ties between workers and their employers.

As work has become specialized, we also have developed occupations in which the demand for work shifts from season to season.
On family farms work was, and is, seasonal in the sense that each season has its particular demands. But indoors and outdoors, there is something useful to be done each month of the year. The season for wood-cutting comes when the fields are bare; for sewing, before or after pantry shelves are stocked with jellies and preserves.

But when factories began to turn out the clothing that families had made during the spring and the fall sewing, factory workers entered jobs in which they were likely to be employed for only part of the year. A cutter or a machine operator may be an expert at his own job, but he finds it is hard to earn in some other way when the factory slows down or closes.

All these changes in the kinds and places and time of work have made the demand for workers changeable and uneven.

As a result, many workers--especially industrial workers--were without jobs even in boom times.

The Committee on Economic Security found that in the years 1922-29 an average of 8 percent of our industrial workers were unemployed. In the best of those years, nearly 1,500,000, on the average, were without jobs.

When hard times came, further millions lost their chance to earn a living. By 1932 and 1933 industrial unemployment had risen to about 39 percent. That meant two industrial workers out of five--10,000,000 or more in all.

The word "unemployment" was not used in English dictionaries before 1888. "Unemployable" came into use only a year earlier.

As far as we can look back, men and women, of course, had lost one way of earning their living and had to find others. Groups of workers, like the hand weavers, had seen their work taken away by machines. But it is only recently that we have realized that there could be a widespread situation-- even in good times--in which large numbers of people who needed to work and wanted to work had no chance to do so.

It was not until machines had knit our lives closely together in industry and trade that unemployment could weigh down families throughout a community or a nation. Only recently have we realized that the requirements of work have become so specialized and exacting that at any one time some people cannot hold any paid job.

In our present money economy, unemployment has become a common hazard of family life like the epidemics which swept our cities three or four generations ago. A family's livelihood can be cut off as quickly and unexpectedly as their lives once were cut off by typhus, yellow fever, or cholera.

Unemployment is like a contagion also because it spreads. When a big factory shuts down, its whole neighborhood and city suffers. The livelihood of all who have been selling their goods and services to those wage earners is affected--storekeepers, landlords, doctors, barbers, owners of movie houses, and, in turn, the workers whom they employ and those who produce the goods they sell. When large numbers of people in one part of the country are without earnings, families on farms and in cities hundreds of miles away may find their living less secure.

Science and invention have given ordinary people ease and comfort and variety of which even rich people of earlier civilizations did not dream. A pair of silk stockings once was a present for a king or queen. But this progress has a price. It demands that we use our ingenuity to keep families independent, now that their living hinges on the judgment, skill, and good luck of many other people as well as of themselves. We have shown our ingenuity in making machines and scientific discoveries. The job now is to adapt our common life to the changes that came with our progress.

FAMILY SECURITY AND SOCIAL SECURITY

The words "social security" have become popular in the last five or ten years. Actually the right and duty of a community to protect its members is as old as the records of men. Primitive tribes have rules and customs to assure the safety of all.

Even pioneer American families, of course, relied on each other for help in trouble and emergencies. Barn-raisings and corn-huskings, which have lasted down to our times, are a survival of years when a household asked the neighbors' help in an emergency, knowing it would give its help when its turn came.

But communities did not rely wholly upon the willingness of people to help each other. They did not rely wholly even on the willingness of families to support their own members. The common law of England, for example, lays down the duties husbands and wives owe to family support.
Under later circumstances we have found many of the older family laws oppressive, such as the laws which restricted the right of a woman to her earnings, or her right to hold or will property, or to make decisions about her children. Those laws, however, were intended for the protection of families under the circumstances in which they lived when the laws were made. They held a family together as an economic unit.

The great English commentator, Blackstone, wrote: ". . .even the disabilities which the wife lies under are for the most part intended for her protection and benefit. So great a favorite is the female sex of the laws of England."

In the Colonies, drawing their traditions from England, a husband was obliged by law to support his wife in the manner justified by his circumstances. He was liable for the debts she had contracted before her marriage, as well as later ones. She had a right to inherit part of his estate when he died. In these ways, law and custom, as well as affection, protected the security of persons least able to get security for themselves.

Since a living was made in families, it was through families that a community made and enforced its security measures.

Many of these measures remain with us today. The security of children, wives, and aged parents does not depend upon the willingness of their relatives to support them. It is written into our laws and enforced daily in our courts. It is a form of social security because we see to it as a society that relatives give this support when they can, whether they wish to or not.

SECURITY IN HEALTH AND SAFETY

As cities have grown up we have taken another series of steps for social security by banding together to pay for certain kinds of protection that no one family can provide for themselves. We have police and fire departments, for example. We make fire laws governing the kinds of buildings that people may build in safety to themselves and their neighbors. We support public-health departments. We set up traffic regulations to protect safety of life on the highways and streets.

We also have taken steps to aid helpless people who need a kind of care or an amount of protection that few families can provide for themselves. As our increasing scientific knowledge showed the need and the way, we built hospitals for the mentally sick and for people with tuberculosis. We made laws and opened clinics and special schools for crippled children.

At first these measures to help unfortunate people dealt chiefly with those who were dangerous to others, such as mental patients and people sick with communicable diseases. More recently we realized that it is public economy as well as kindness to make sure that other disabled people get care, since often they can recover enough to earn a living for themselves. It is cheaper to cure them than to care for them for years in institutions.

About forty years ago we began to realize that security in health and life must follow people out of their homes and into the factories.

Our greatest success has come in making life safe for children.

Up to about 1900 many children had gone along with their elders into the factories. In 1900 nearly a fifth of all the 10-to-16-year-old children were at work. This was a larger percentage than had been found in any previous census year.

Then State after State decided that factories were not places for children. Laws were passed to restrict child labor and to specify the conditions under which children might work, if at all. At the same time other laws made it compulsory for children to have more chance to go to school and stay in school. In 1930 less than one-twentieth of the 10-to-16-year-old children were in gainful work.

We have not yet lifted by any means all the burden of harmful labor from the shoulders of children, but most of it is gone. And in the twentieth century we have come far toward achieving what some of the colonists set themselves as a goal: the right of children to the security of an education. In 1932 President Hoover's Committee on Recent Social Trends declared that the fact that half the children of high school age were in the high schools was "evidence of the most successful single effort which government in the United States has ever put forth."

In the past forty years many States have passed laws to promote health and safety in work for adults as well as for children--laws governing hours of work, night work, dangerous work, and the like. These are conditions which workers no longer can control for themselves as they could when they worked at home.

SECURITY OF LIVELIHOOD

And in some ways we have taken steps toward assuring not only health and safety in work but also the money to which working families must look in order to buy their living.

When children were taken out of factories and put in school, it was obvious that some families suffered from the loss of the children's earnings. This was especially true in families where the father was incapacitated or dead. Widows with children were no longer a matrimonial prize.

In 1911 two States passed laws to give small money allowances to needy mothers, so that they could keep their children at home rather than put them in an institution. By 1930, 44 States and the District of Columbia had mothers'-aid laws on their books. Upward of 200,000 children were being aided.

Other laws looked to the earnings of adults.

By 1911 a majority of the States had passed laws establishing minimum wages for employees on public works.

By 1910, 10 percent of the States had established free public employment services--a measure later adopted by a majority of States.

In that same year, 1910, New York State passed the first workmen's compensation act, followed in the next twenty years by all but four of the remaining States. These laws required employers to insure their employees against injury. Under them the cost of industrial accidents, and to some extent the costs of sickness due to work, have become a part of the running costs of industry.

Under the old common law injured workers had a right to try to collect damages from their employers. The workmen's compensation acts established a more just and orderly way to give workers what the common law admitted as their due.

In the past twenty years many States have taken steps to give some security to another large group of their people--the old people who never will earn again. Arizona passed the first old-age pension act in 1914. After the World War one State after another rapidly followed suit. By the end of 1930 fourteen others had put such laws on their statute books, and in the next three years ten more were added.

This wave of laws to pay regular allowances to needy old people did not come by accident or imitation. It came because of the growing percentage of old people in the population and the inability of the old to work for their living. Old age was becoming an increasingly serious problem to old people and their families and their towns and counties.

Most of the allowances given to old people under State laws have been very small. Even so, they have helped many old people to stay in their own homes and to keep their self-respect when they share the homes of others. Giving allowances has been cheaper as well as more humane than caring for old people in poorhouses.

Mothers' aid and old-age allowances are not "pensions" in the sense in which we usually use that word. Widowed mothers and old people do not get assistance just because they are widowed or have reached a certain age. They also must show that they are in need.

Regular allowances have not been given to all the needy aged and needy mothers even in States where there have been such laws. Under some of the State laws a county chose whether or not it wished to operate under the State plan. When county and State funds ran low, even eligible applicants remained on waiting lists for months or years.

Mothers' aid and old-age assistance are a modern way of giving what we used to call charity. They are relief measures. They recognize the responsibility of counties and States to give security to people who cannot earn it for themselves and provide a more just and orderly way to meet that responsibility.
They are better methods than those which States and towns and counties long have used, such as giving baskets of food or tons of coal, or building orphanages and almshouses. They give the people they help a greater chance to choose how they will live. They provide them with what all of us now use to keep our freedom and self-respect. They give them money.

One social historian has called measures like these social inventions. They are ways we have invented to fit our social life to the changes brought by mechanical and scientific inventions.

Nearly five years ago one State made a social invention which never before had been used in the United States. In January 1932 Wisconsin passed the first American unemployment compensation law. This law is unlike those mentioned above. It does not apply to people who cannot work because they are too young or too old or too sick. Its purpose is to promote the security of the able-bodied.

Workmen's compensation acts protect workers from the costs of accidents at work. Unemployment compensation acts protect them against some of the costs of the accident of not having any job at all.

Under unemployment compensation, pay rolls or wages or both are taxed in certain industries to pay workers in those industries a part of their wages for a time while they are un-employed through no wish or fault of their own. In some countries these payments are supplemented by governmental grants from general taxation.

The tax borne by employers is a charge on industry, like other costs of doing business. When workers also are taxed, their payments are like premiums paid for fire insurance or accident insurance. The many people who run a risk pay toward meeting the loss of those on whom catastrophe falls. The lucky help pay for the unlucky. It is worth their while to do so, for they do not know when catastrophe may hit themselves.

Under the systems of unemployment compensation so far established in the United States, unemployed workers still carry a large part of the loss of being without jobs. Unemployment benefits usually do not begin until a man has been out of work for several weeks. They provide only a part of the amount he would have earned. They cease after a limited period, even though he still has not found another job.

Benefits paid to unemployed workers cushion the shock of losing a job, especially in short-time unemployment, which is the most usual type of unemployment in ordinary times. They make it possible for workers to keep on buying their living while they are looking for other work. In that way, these payments also benefit all those with whom these workers ordinarily deal.

Unemployment compensation is not charity or relief but a means of preventing need for relief. Through unemployment insurance, like other types of insurance, a loss which is crushing to those who incur it in any one month or year is made bearable by being distributed over large numbers of people and over a period of time.

SAVING FOR A RAINY DAY

Our expression "saving for a rainy day" recalls the times when families stored wood in the shed and food in the cellar and pantry for seasons when it was difficult or impossible to go out to fetch them. Why do they not store money in the bank now for the time of unemployment or old age when it cannot be made?

There is an answer to that question in a study made by The Brookings Institution, which analyzes the incomes and savings of families in our richest year, 1929.

In that year, the study found, families with incomes under $1,000 spent, on the average, more than they received. They drew on past savings or got outside help or went into debt. Those families with incomes of less than $1,000 represented a fifth of all the families of the Nation in 1929.

Families with incomes of $1,000 to $1,500 kept even, on the average, but saved little, especially in the cities where everything had to be bought and living costs were higher. These families represented another fifth of all the families in that year.

Thus the study found that about 40 percent of our families saved very little, as a group, in our richest year for the hard times that were coming.

Practically all the savings of that prosperous year were made by the families at the top of the money ladder.

About 10 percent of us had family incomes over $4,600. They were found to have made 86 percent of all the savings.

Another 10 percent had family incomes of $3,100 to $4,600. They were found to have made 12 percent of all the savings.

The great majority of American families--the 80 percent who had incomes under $3,100 in 1929--were found by that study to have saved only 2 percent of all that families saved that year.

Could the 80 percent have saved more than they did?

The Brookings study declared that at 1929 prices a family income of $2,000 "may perhaps be regarded as sufficient to supply only basic necessities." An income of $2,500 was "a very moderate one."

Even low income families today are likely to regard as necessities things which their parents may have done without, such as running water, electricity, haircuts, movies, a greater variety in clothing and diet. It costs more to be sick. Medical care is better and, hence, more expensive. An employee who loses time from his job because of sickness often loses pay and sometimes loses the job as well.

But what would be the result if all families did save as much as they could by doing without all but the barest necessities?

The families who now save little--those with low and moderate incomes--make up a large share of the markets on which our living depends. In 1929, 70 percent of all the families were under the $2,500 mark which the Brookings study defined as "moderate." The spending of that 70 percent is necessary to hold up the fabric of trade and industry on which the living of the Nation depends.
When a large part of the population cuts down spending, that fabric sags, and workers and others feel the weight of hard times. That is what happened in the early years of the depression when fear and necessity made people stop buying.

There seems no question of the willingness of American families to save when their incomes approach a comfortable level. But the evidence of this study shows that most families, and especially the families whose risks are greatest, have little to look to when a rainy day comes. Their security lies in the steadiness of their earning and the safety of what savings they are able to make for the years when they no longer can earn.

When trade and industry gathered homes into closely built-up towns and cities, it no longer was safe for each house to have its own well. The safety of the whole town made it necessary to have a town water supply.
The safety of all of us now depends also on the general streams of earning and spending. Unless many families are buying--are paying money into a common pool by their spending--the stream of earnings is lowered, and all have less chance to earn. The well-being of country families and city families depends on the ability of other families to buy.

The security of families has followed their work out of the homes. Social security no longer is homemade.

THE SOCIAL SECURITY ACT OF 1935

The Social Security Act of 1935 grows out of these many changes in American life. It consolidates our past experience in meeting insecurity. It also sets up a bulwark against some of the newer kinds of insecurity that threaten large numbers of us in this twentieth century.

Several parts of the Social Security Act deal with groups of people whose troubles we have recognized for many years. These provisions consider the people who are too young or too old to earn or are physically handicapped. The act authorizes Federal grants-in-aid to enable the States to broaden and extend regular allowances for needy mothers, the needy blind, and the needy aged. It authorizes grants-in-aid for State services for child welfare, for crippled children, and for physically handicapped people who can be helped to work again. The provisions for child welfare apply especially to rural areas.

These sections of the Social Security Act draw on our national resources to help all States to do better what most or all have undertaken in some way and to some degree. They give a way to put into effect the best measures we have been able to devise for helping people who are unable to help themselves.

Other provisions of the Social Security Act recognize the risks of sickness--risks which affect all of us, young and old, rich and poor. The act authorizes Federal grants-in-aid to help States to give service for the health of mothers and children and to strengthen and extend public-health services. It authorizes funds for the study of national and interstate health problems. These parts of the act promote security by preventing sickness and by giving children, especially country children, a fair start in life.

Finally, two provisions deal with insecurity in earning. They apply to groups of our people who have moved into occupations where earning often is risky. They cover a great share of the wage earners who are wholly dependent on their ability to buy a living.

Under one of these provisions, the Social Security Act sets up a framework to protect the States which wish to enact laws for unemployment compensation. Federal funds are authorized to help a State to do this by meeting the costs of administration.

The Social Security Act does not say that any State must have an unemployment compensation law. It does not say what kind of law a State should have. It does say that business in a State which has unemployment compensation shall not be penalized in competition with business in States which do not.

From the beginning of 1935, when the possibility of harmony in State action became clear during the discussion of the Social Security Act in Congress, and up to April 1, 1937, 42 States and the District of Columbia had enacted unemployment compensation laws. These laws are a beginning in making the costs of industry's fluctuations a charge upon industry rather than only on the jobless workers, who hitherto have borne the brunt of industrial change.

The act thus helps States to find ways in which workers and employers can steady livelihood. It also provides ways to build up the livelihood of wage earners in old age.

The Social Security Act establishes a system of Federal old-age benefits which will provide monthly payments, in 1942 and after, to many workers when they reach the age of 65. The amount of a man's benefit depends on the wages he has received in his working years, after 1936, as defined in the act. Thus old-age benefits are based on wage records.

Under another provision of the act grants are made to the States for old-age assistance. Old-age assistance is not the same as old-age benefits. In old-age assistance Federal, State, and local funds are used to help old people who lack means of their own. Regular assistance may be given to any aged person who is entitled to aid under a State plan approved by the Social Security Board. Thus old-age assistance is helping those who now are old and in need.

Old-age benefits, on the other hand, offer future provision for large groups of people who now are working and earning. Under the plan for old-age benefits, the majority of the Nation's wage earners can look forward to a definite old-age income of their own. Their old-age benefits will supplement any savings these workers have been able to make. They do not have to prove that they are needy. The benefits are theirs regardless of need.

If a worker dies before he has received his benefits, his estate receives a lump sum equal to 3 1/2 percent of his wages counted toward benefits.

In general, the Social Security Act helps to assure some income to people who cannot earn and to steady the income of millions of wage earners during their working years and their old age. In one way and another taxation is spread over large groups of people to carry the cost of giving some security to those who are unfortunate or incapacitated at any one time. The act is a foundation on which we have begun to build security as States and as a people, against the risks which families cannot meet one by one.

The colonists and frontiersmen wanted independence. They wanted a chance for themselves and their children.

How to negotiate with debt collectors

It pays to know your rights and keep a record of all your communications when you butt heads with debt collectors. Here are some ways to hold your own.

When you bargain with a debt collector, you're going head-to-head with a tough, professional negotiator. Following these tips can help you come out ahead.

Learn your rights.

When collecting a debt from you, a debt collector must play fair. For details, this consumer brochure on fair debt collection from the Federal Trade Commission.

"What You Should Know About Debt Collection."

Prioritize your bills.

No matter what a debt collector says, an unpaid credit card bill is not the most important bill you have to pay this month. Providing necessities for your family comes first.

"It does not make sense to put yourself in a position that you can't pay necessary bills," Detweiler says.

Estimate how much you can pay and offer less.

"Don't do anything you can't afford to do," says John Ventura, consumer attorney in Brownsville, Texas and author of the e-book "Stop Debt Collectors Cold." "And don't do anything dangerous."

Avoid sending postdated checks to a debt collector or agreeing to automatic electronic payments from your checking account.

"Presuming goodwill on the other side gets people in trouble," Ventura says.

Don't tell them your life story.

"Don't go into a lengthy explanation of why you can't pay," Detweiler says. "They don't have a lot of sympathy. This is what they do for their job. They hear down-on-your-luck stories day in and day out."

Control the information flow

Keep private information private.

Don't give a debt collector personal information such as where you work, where you bank or your checking account number.

"Say as little as possible and stick to the facts," Detweiler says.

Stay calm and focused.

No matter what a debt collector says, keep your cool and stay focused on the negotiation.

"The more in control you sound and the less you fall apart, the more likely you are to get what you want out of the negotiation," Detweiler says.

Tape the call if you can.

Flicking on a tape recorder is a great way to keep a debt collector in line. Plus, you get a record of the call.

Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia allow you to secretly tape your phone conversations. In the other 15 states, you can tape with the other party's permission. And if you tell the debt collector you are going to tape and he or she keeps talking, that's considered giving permission.

"Taping the conversation may keep them on their best behavior," Detweiler says.

Take notes.

File all collection letters and keep detailed notes of collection calls. Note the day and time of each call, the name of the collection agency, the first and last name of the caller and what was said.

"Make sure there's a record," Ventura says. "If you've made a deal with them, get proof."

Get proof of payment agreement in writing.

"Get it in writing," says Jerry Jarzombek, a consumer attorney in Fort Worth, Texas. "If they told you half of it satisfies the obligation and that's what you want to do, have it in writing."

Send a letter to the debt collector outlining the payment agreement. You'll want to send this letter via certified mail so you'll receive a receipt once the letter is delivered. Keep a copy for your records.

If you plan to pay by check, add the following disclaimer: "Cashing this check constitutes payment in full." Write this right on the check.

Timing it right

Wipe your credit clean.

Ask a debt collector to remove any negative information they've placed on your credit report. At the very least, insist that your account be listed as paid in full rather than paid in settlement. Once they agree, get it in writing.

Don't be rushed.

A debt collector will push and push for you to send them money immediately. Don't do anything until you have confirmation of a payment agreement in writing.

"Because you need it in writing, you have to resist all those demands and quick offers to do it overnight," says Mary Fons, a consumer protection attorney in Stoughton, Wisc.

Negotiate at the end of the month.

Because commissions for debt collectors are based on what they do each month, you may want to try negotiating near the end of the month. You could land a really good deal.

I recently took a trip to the island of Kauai with my wife, and was more than satisfied with what we found there. She loves luxury, whereas I would rather be camped out in a tent in the middle of nowhere. We were both able to do what we wanted to. We got to stay in a nice hotel for some of the trip, and spend the rest of it hiking around in the interior and camping on an isolated beach. By compromising, we were able to both get what we wanted. It was a great occasion for both of us, and one that we won't soon forget. I can not wait for our next vacation!

With these features enabled, your task bar will not normally be seen, but when you put your cursor where it should be, it pops up.

But sometimes, the task bar gets recalcitrant and won’t pop up – especially if an open screen is maximized and sitting on top of it. Not to worry – hit either “Windows” Key and there it is.

Business Start-Up Fact Finder Manual

America is coming home to work. Home-based offices are becoming the wave of the future. Tens of thousands of workers are opting for this way of life, a life in which they can make their own hours, commute to work in seconds, make their own choices and become their own bosses.

For many the home office is becoming the Location for a full-time job and the primary source of income. For others it is a part-time venture. Many start on a part-time basis and grow their business into a full-time operation.

   Current figures available indicate that during 1991 the percentage of self-employed working from home jumped by almost 6% to approximately 12 million. While working at home has an almost irresistible appeal to many, and many have some big misconceptions of what it is like, here is some very useful information that can help you get started successfully.

Legalities of Working at Home
Zoning

Before setting up your new business it would be advisable to check on the legal status of your business. You need to check zoning laws for your community which may dictate if you can legally operate a business from home. We realize that many businesses never check on zoning for their home-based business and chances that they ever get into difficulties with the law are probably pretty slim. If there are no changes in structure and you do not have customers and or employees enter your home, regulations will tend to be far more easy. Laws and regulations change from community to community, but the following 5 factors will generally be regulated items:
1. Separate business and private entrances.
2. Square footage of the home which is taken up by commercial space.
3. Employees working in the home.
4. Certain occupations such as jewelry or clothing
5. Storage of commercial goods, especially any hazardous materials.
Here is an important suggestion: keep relations with your neighbors on a friendly basis. Your neighbors will soon become aware that you are working at home. Some may even be envious, and yes, unfortunately zoning authorities will generally become aware of home office zoning infractions through a "friendly neighbor".

Business License

Most cities or counties require businesses to be licensed. Some home-operated businesses, however, are not required to have a business license. Check with your local City or County Clerks Office to obtain regulations for your locality.

D.B.A. Registration

If you are using your own name as your business name it will not need to be registered, but if you use any other name, or even your abbreviated name, almost all localities require that you register the name. This is called a fictitious name registration or D.B.A. "Doing Business As" registration. If your name is:
Randy M Jones and you name your business Randy Jones or Randy M Jones Enterprise you will not have to register it, but if you call it: RMJ Enterprises you will generally have to register the name.
Most states have a name search bureau which is a part of the state government. You will generally be able to call this office to see if a given name has already been registered to someone else in the state. This is important to do, or it could be costly later. If you give your business a name which is already registered to another company, the other company may demand, and even take legal action to make sure you comply, that you cease to use the name.

Your Company as a Legal Entity

Businesses are most commonly set-up as one of the following entities:
The Sole Proprietorship
Incorporation
Partnership
Most new businesses choose the Sole Proprietorship. It is the least complicated. It requires no paperwork. The proprietor you, or you and your spouse as the owner, or owners, are taxed for all net profit from your business. You add the income of the business to other income, or deduct the business loss from other income. Your tax adviser can give you specific information.
The disadvantage of the Sole Proprietorship is that as the owner you can be held fully liable in a lawsuit. An incorporation, on the other hand, will give you some protection. In this case the "INC" rather than you is the legal business entity. If you are starting a business that tends to have liability exposure the corporation may be the way to go. In this and other legal questions, only your attorney can give you competent legal advice.
Partnerships are generally chosen when unrelated individuals own a business. A partnership should be set up by an attorney, or all kinds of problems can develop later.

Designing Your Work-space

First, you must determine how much space you need. Chances are what you may initially think is quite large may be crowed or not enough space. While many businesses are started from a corner of the bedroom or kitchen, if the space is available it would be far better idea to take a spare area of the house and convert it it into your office. There may be space in the basement, garage, or a spare bedroom. Having a separate space is more efficient and will make for
maximum efficiency. It is also psychologically important. You do not want home activities to interfere with your business, or vice versa.
Friends and family will need to be told politely firmly that business hours mean business and dropping in, or calling to chit chat is not acceptable. Psychologists suggest that you work "from" home not just in your home. There is a danger of becoming isolated. Inasmuch as time allows, participate in seminars and local business activities and organizations.

Financial Planning

It is said and also my own personal experience that owners of new businesses never have enough time or money. The majority of small businesses which do not succeed will fail because they are not properly financed. In your financial planning carefully review all required start-up expenses as well as on-going expenses before revenue will be generated. Estimate your profit margins and all fixed and controlled expenses. Almost all entrepreneurs will tend to be much more optimistic about their estimate of the financial performance of a business taken what is necessarily realistic. There are always unforeseen expenses.

It is a good idea to only invest in absolutely necessary expenses. This applies to furnishings, supplies and all equipment. Computer equipment in recent years has become outdated within a short period of time. So, if what you acquire will serve you well for 2-3 years will be able to upgrade your equipment later on. Your emphasis should be on conserving capital. As your business develops, unexpected hurdles will come along and periods of low revenue. Your capital will make it possible to keep your business operating during these times.

Why Should You Have A Business Plan?

While writing a business plan can be made into a highly sophisticated undertaking especially by large corporations, its easy to do when done for a new or small owner operated-business. Essentially, you will be committing your plan to paper. As you do so your thought will become more formal and concrete and this will tremendously assist you in the development of your business. If you are considering to obtain financing for your new business either through a bank or the SBA, a formal business plan will be a necessity. Home-operated businesses will have a much more difficult time in obtaining financing.

Don't Forget Uncle Sam

As in all undertakings of life from birth to death and beyond, the IRS will be there to watch over you. Almost all small, home-based businesses will start out as "Sole Proprietorship." This legal status is best for ease of handling and for tax benefits. Your net business income or loss becomes an addition or deduction to other income declare at the end of the year. Careful record-keeping of all business revenue and expenses is a must. Keep a separate business checking amount for your business. Do not intermingle business and personal expenses. Other special tax benefits and regulations apply to home-operated businesses. You should obtain professional advise from your tax adviser.

Insurance

One disadvantage of being self-employed is not having health and disability insurance. You may also need liability insurance. Your homeowners insurance covers your belongings in your home, but it may not cover all business inventory and equipment. Check with your insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverage.

The more you know about your business, the better your chances of success. Attend seminars and join trade associations. Read books and trade publications. If you do not have a business background a business introductory class at a local college would be advisable.

You and your family's future and livelihood is at stake. So your decision and planning to start a business are very serious matter. Establish a long range plan which encompasses your business and financial plans. You should obtain legal or financial advice from an attorney or accountant before committing to any long range or major financial transactions. Agreements with suppliers or customers should be put into writing.

You Must Wear Many Hats

Small business owners over time can become experts on a variety of subjects. At the start the most important aspect is the mind-set. Your communication to the rest of the world through all available means will determine your success.

BINDING - To extend the circulation life of your paperback editions, Coleman offers you several binding options. You can elect for Coleman to send automatically your paperback books for a permanent hardback binding with the following choices:
Library binding - A high grade buckram covering in the color of your choice, with a sewn binding. The title and author are stamped on the spine of the book;
Textmount binding - A laminated paper over binder's board, with a glue binding, having the front and back of the original cover glued on, with the title and author stamped on the spine;
Vinabind� - the original paperback jacket is mounted onto binder's board, entirely laminated, with a glue binding.
If you elect to have your paperback books bound, you should expect an approximate thirty day delay in delivery of these books due to processing time at our bindery.
KAPCO COVERS - a high quality laminating film covering the paperback binding, adding strength and protection. Since this application is performed by Coleman, you may expect no delay in delivery time when this covering is applied.

The daily release of purchase orders to publishers expedites our delivery of material to your facility/library.
Daily shipping via UPS: your books ship to you on an average within 48 hours of their receipt by Coleman.
Our average turnaround delivery of domestic material via Coleman's facility is 21 days, though our present goal is to reduce this time by 6 days.
Faster turnaround averaging 10 days to 2 weeks are available with standard drop shipments direct from the publisher's warehouse to your library.

INVOICING
Customers are invited to define any specific procedures which will ease the handling of their invoices for payment, including the stipulation of: the number of invoices produced, the order in which titles are listed on the invoice, and funding codes.

Invoices may accompany the shipment or be mailed directly to the appropriate accounting location.

All invoices for foreign items are billed in US dollars. Terms are net 30 days.

Coleman does not hesitate to prepay an order on behalf of our client. There is no additional charge for this service. Prepaid items are invoice when shipped.

I want to personally add my welcome to the CBC website. My goal at Coleman Book Co. is to build a company that does a better job than any other vendor in the marketplace at meeting its professional obligations to Students/Teachers. Our mission, I believe, can be succinctly stated:
* We find the product you need in the shortest possible time span, at a reasonable cost.
* First and foremost we judge ourselves by customer satisfaction and not by the growth of annual revenues, profits or the reduction of operating expenses.
* We want each employee of Coleman Book Co. to be enhanced by his/her experience with us, recognizing that we can learn from each other.
I value hearing from you, whether you would like to offer a pat-on-the-back to one of our employees, or have constructive criticism to share. Like any other member of CBC staff, I am available to assist you whenever the need arises.
